オバマ講演を読む1

オバマ大統領のノーベル平和賞講演のビデオがノーベル財団HPで見られるのですが、何を言ってるのかよくわからなかったのです。

30分もしゃべっているし、もともと英語のリスニングはそれほど得意ではないのでしかたがないと思い、講演内容のテキストのほうを読んでみることにしました。

ところが、ざっと読んでみるととても難しくて何を言わんとするのかがわからない。

そこで、めずらしく辞書を片手に細かく読み始めたのですが、これが苦難の始まりでした。

とりあえず、最初のほうだけ訳してみました。わりと謙虚ですね出足は。

閣下、国王陛下、ノルウェーノーベル賞委員会部会メンバー、米国市民、世界の市民へ


私は深い感謝と大きな畏敬の念をもってこの栄誉を受けます。
この賞は我々の最も大いなる志に対して語りかけるものであり、我々はこの世界にあるすべての残虐と困難さに対して抗えない運命の虜ではないということです。我々の行動は重大であり、歴史を正義の目指す方向へ向けるものです。

そして私はいまだ、私のなすべき大いなる決断がなされていないという多数の議論をみとめなければ、怠慢のそしりを免れないでしょう。それは細かく言えば、世界の舞台での私の仕事において、私は今出発点にいるのであって終着点にはいないためであります。かつてこの賞を受けた、シュバイツァー、キング、マーシャルそしてマンデラという歴史上の巨人達に比較すれば、私のなしたことは些少であります。そして今世界中には、正義を希求するがゆえに投獄され鞭打たれている者、人道的組織において難民救済に骨を折る者、強固な利己主義に対して黙して勇敢に行動し他を鼓舞する名も無き数百万人の人々がいます。これらの人々、ある者は知られ、ある者はその助けた人以外からは知られることの無い男女、のほうが私以上にこの栄誉にふさわしいという識者の見解には議論の余地はないのです。



OSLO, Norway - Your Majesties, Your Royal Highnesses, Distinguished Members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, citizens of America, and citizens of the world:


I receive this honor with deep gratitude and great humility. It is an award that speaks to our highest aspirations - that for all the cruelty and hardship of our world, we are not mere prisoners of fate. Our actions matter, and can bend history in the direction of justice.

And yet I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the considerable controversy that your generous decision has generated. In part, this is because I am at the beginning, and not the end, of my labors on the world stage. Compared to some of the giants of history who have received this prize - Schweitzer and King; Marshall and Mandela - my accomplishments are slight. And then there are the men and women around the world who have been jailed and beaten in the pursuit of justice; those who toil in humanitarian organizations to relieve suffering; the unrecognized millions whose quiet acts of courage and compassion inspire even the most hardened of cynics. I cannot argue with those who find these men and women - some known, some obscure to all but those they help - to be far more deserving of this honor than I.
